Both (Serenity & Firefly) are coming to Blu-ray, but whilst Serenity will probably be region free, Firefly will most likely be region encoded, what this means is we are going to have to wait in some cases before Firefly can be seen by International Fans.

I'm a big supporter of Blu-ray, the comparison of video and sound quality compared to DVD is similar to that of DVD to VHS tape (providing you are using an upto date Digital TV with HDMI input)

I will definitely be buying Serenity on Blu-ray (already been out on HD-DVD [the format that lost the war])

First thing I've gotta do is get myself a Blu-Ray player ;-)

----------------
Now playing: Greg Edmonson - Whitefall/Book (http://www.foxytunes.com/artist/greg+edmonson/track/whitefall+book)
via FoxyTunes (http://www.foxytunes.com/signatunes/)

I bought Serenity on HD-DVD - and an Xbox HD-DVD drive to hook up to my laptop just to play it! It does look fab on an HD projector or a really good HD panel.

I'll have to resort to downloading the Firefly episodes though :( Can't justify the cost of a Blu-Ray drive just for one boxset, and I'm against Blu-Ray on principle too. shame :(

... then again, when those nice multiformat players come out (and they will), I suppose I'll reconsider. Does my purchase of no less than three copies of the movie, two DVD boxsets and the film on HD-DVD maybe cancel out the bad downloading karma? ;)

in a word NO!! I've seen people complain about the cost of Firefly on Blu-ray (despite it being heavily discounted), and seriously frown upon people who can't be bothered anymore to purchase official stuff (I also own 3 different copies of the movie & 3 Firefly box sets (1 which has all the cast signatures)

When Firefly comes out, I WILL be buying the Blu-ray disc set - A blu-ray player isn't that expensive or if you already own a PS3 then you mostly sorted

Well, I've only downloaded the HD versions of the film (I own it in standard def, I only even became capable of playing back HD stuff very recently) - I won't consider it morally wrong to not buy something because I can't physically play it back! (the HD downloads are encoded in x264, which my PC could just about handle, but that PC couldn't handle 1080p HD-DVDs - only my laptop with a 360 HD-DVD drive can just about manage)

It was more a matter of me not having the cash to afford the appropriate hardware to merit buying the disc :D The same goes for the blu-ray stuff... I'll be able to play back the 720p x264 videos (I already have the entire series in x264 from Universal HD, but it has the UHD logo onscreen throughout and ad break gaps) - it'll be lovely to get the unedited versions to go with my existing collection on DVD, the PAL versions of the Firefly boxset all have awful audio tracks (the mastering studio took the easy way out when converting from NTSC and PAL, and just timestretched the audio - it sounds horrible!)

to sum up,

PS3. spit

blu-ray format. spit

x264 + last legs PC which can just about decode x264: win

I'll still be evangelising and recommending the boxset to others, which is just as important, nay?

(not trying to justify my actions or inactions here, just debating whether downloading the series is not such a bad thing if you're still telling other people all about it and encouraging them to get watching, especially if you lend them your SD boxset as a teaser ;))

When Owlspouse decided he just had to have BluRay, the first sets he bought were Firefly and The Matrix.

Now, maybe it's because I'm old and blind, but I don't see much of a difference between the BR version and the good old HD picture on our Loewe set (which now has been relegated to the upstairs bedroom because it won't work properly with the BR player). The only place I've ever seen BR pictures look really spectacular is in Best Buy on the really high-end sets. The Sharp 32" screen may not do it justice. I'm still not convinced that it's worth the money if you already get a decent picture.

The test is to pause the picture on DVD version and look closely at one part and then check out the Blu-ray version at the same point - you should notice a difference providing you eyesight is okay.

The only thing I will say is that some of the CGI hasn't been upgraded properly (check out Out of Gas & Serenity floating in Space)

Sound quality is a thing people overlook on Blu-ray too, sound is crisper and has more clarity.

I'm afraid I don't have the patience to test it out. Plus I gave the DVDs away to a dear friend I'm trying to convert. I will admit that the sound's pretty good, but we're using a little Bose 3-2-1 system that would my dogs' snores sound symphonic. The room's only 14x14 which seems optimal for the combo.
