View Full Version : Has Universal definitely greenlit this movie for production?

Only acceptable answers are Yes (with evidence), No, (with evidence), or I don't know (no evidence required).
Color me a bit skeptical that Universal is hot to work with Whedon again, after Serenity. Though I have no doubt he's got supporters there. Question is, have his supporters there gotten him a solid deal, which can now be finalized, or (given that he's talking about 'polishing' the Goners script, which he finished a long time ago) does he now have to try and sell the MOVIE to them--as opposed to the screenplay, which was in the process of being sold back around the time Serenity came out--and before it became evident just how badly Serenity had failed.
Obviously it couldn't be a big budget film, and Whedon does have a fanbase out there. I think if he made it for no more than 10mil, it could do okay.

Universal have paid for the draft screenplay (back a few years ago). The deal was in the early millions of dollars range for the script. The deal was brokered with Mary Parent, Vice Chairman, Worldwide Production for Universal Pictures. Mary Parent and Scott Stuber (another Goners producer) transitioned into their five-year exclusive producing agreement with Universal at the beginning of 2006. This is a seperate company, although the projects are exclusive to Universal. This includes Goners. They have been, and continue, to work with Joss Whedon on refining and polishing up the Goners script for Universal -- work continued thru 2006, the first year of the deal, on this.
Although budgets won't get solidifed until it is to enter production, I expect it will actually be on the side of impressive due to the nature of the project.

Gossi, I'm going to take that as a 'no'. It has not been greenlit for production yet. And essentially, it's being pushed by some former Universal execs with strong Whedonistic sympathies, who are trying to make it as producers.
In the wake of Whedon being effectively tossed off the Wonder Woman project (which may be for the best, for all concerned, but it's still a punishing public humiliation for Whedon), I find it very hard to believe Universal is going to give him a bigger budget than the 40mil he had for Serenity (which was hardly impressive), when Serenity couldn't even manage 39mil for its worldwide release.
Universal has certainly been known to make stupid mistakes, but not only does Whedon have a lousy track record on the big screen, but the one film he had the most control over was the one that did the worst at the box office--and that was on Universal's dime.
If the script is any good, and they could do it on a low budget, with an experienced director, they'd have a shot at a moderate success.
But with Whedon attached to direct (IF the movie is made), a difficult-to-explain concept, a probable dearth of bankable acting talent, zero name recognition (beyond the name "Whedon" itself, and we know how much that means outside a few online forums) and an 'impressive' budget, I just don't see how this could possibly avoid flopdom. And I'd be very surprised to learn that there aren't a lot of influential people at Universal who would share my misgivings.
And 'separate' only has two e's in it.

Ouch! you really are one of those folks who don't like "good" movies.
I bet you are also one of those folks who though the net hype of "snakes on a plane" would equate to movie ticket sales.
Really I do think the majority of producers have NO IDEA how to sell and idea, nor original concept nor perhaps (the most scary of all) an unknown.
Go back to your fart joke movies, sequels, comic book rip offs, and remakes of old classics, they make allot of money and bore the public into a stupor.
We are going to have fun here, laughing, joking, and looking at the wonders that there are to found in the imagination.
ksnake
02-05-2007, 07:54 PM
Since you obviously haven't read the script, and even a good script doesn't guarantee a good movie, how the hell would you know Goners is going to be good? You like Joss Whedon, so therefore anything he does will be good? You don't even HAVE to see the movie, do you? You've already decided it's a classic--well fine, but the point of THIS thread is to debate the niggling little point of whether there'll even BE a movie in the first place.
I won't ask how you know what kind of movies I like, since you obviously have no basis on which to draw that conclusion. But for the record, I didn't even see Snakes on a Plane. As to your spiel about 'fart joke movies, sequels, comic book rip offs, and remakes of old classics" that "bore the public into a stupor"--thanks for the succinct summary of Mr. Whedon's work for the past few years.
You're going to have a hard time having fun looking at the 'wonders to be found in the imagination', given that you clearly don't have one of your own.

What sincerely cracks me up about this post is that they apparently think there's a snowball's chance in hell that we're interested in continuing to respond to someone with this kind of "to speak with me, you need to jump through these specific hoops" attitude.

What wigs said.... ditto. I saw Serenity just because Joss did it, loved it, saw Firefly because of that, loved that, heard he was doing Goners and considering his track record for me is 100% of things that I have loved, I'm quite happy to put my faith and while away time here waiting for his next brainchild.
After all, Joss = God of storytelling :)

The only kind Joss Whedon has had of late is Humble Pie.

I like how you said Joss's past projects have been 'fart joke movies, sequels, comic book rip offs, and remakes of old classics'. I seriously can't remember Joss ever having made a movie about fart jokes. Serenity was a spin-off, not a sequel. Wonder Woman wasn't gonna be a comic book rip-off, because it actually is Wonder Woman. And when did Joss remake an old classic? Unless Joss has all these other projects hidden away, none of these apply.

To...the guy who thinks he's smart,
ok, so, let's break this down in parts
1. someone is calling us out for supporting a particular writer/director
answer: The first Scorsese movie I ever saw was Raging Bull....since then, I've benn a HUGE Scorsese fan. I've been on Scorsese message boards since Al Gore's beautiful invention (tongue in cheek here you idiot) the Internet came to be, eager to talk with other Scorsese fans about what he was going to do next. The Aviator is one of my favorite movies of all time, and, yes, I'd put Serenity up there. I'm not calling Whedon Scorsese, please, don't put those words in my mouth, even though I know you're ready to start typing away with your 85 words per minute cuz you never got laid ass is about to do so. All I'm saying is, the internet brings fans of different things together.
So, there's Scorsese fans like me. We have several message boards.
Ok, so, in the early part of this decade, I decided to watch my first episode of Buffy when I got back from studying Eastern European history in Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and a few other countries. I found it fascinating. FX played it from the first episode, and I thought it was well-written and well-directed.
I've been a fan of Whedon ever since.
So, it's no surprise, as a fan of old westerns like the Steve McQueen series "Wanted: Dead or Alive" or "Gunsmoke" that I immediately fell in love with Firefly when I saw it in one of my summer issues of Superman.
I gave it a shot and it blew me away.
So, what I'm saying to you here, with all of this background info is...you're a troll idiot.
You have the gall to come in here, into a place where you know you're just coming into to stir up shit...yeah, ooooo. you're the big man, you never cussed, but you came in saying "i'm trying to start an intelligent discussion" or whatever...
no you're not. there's no value to what you're doing.
people come onto these forums to talk to other people who like what this or that persons have done.
i like scorsese, say something bad about him? i know you probably will, because you're an idiot who wants some kind of recognition.
your reason for dissing on the whedon fans here is that no one should blindly be behind any project made by an artistic mind, right?
isn't that the basis of what you said in your original argument?
of course it is.
i'm saying, i watch any scorsese film since i was young because i liked raging bull. i watch any lucas film because i loved star wars. i watch any spielberg film because i loved ET. i watch any shamyalan movie because i loved the sixth sense. and i watch anything whedon does because i loved buffy, angel, firefly and serenity.
and you know what? whedon is the only one of those so far who hasn't disappointed me along the way.
to condemn people for being fans of something an artist hasn't completed yet is like saying that someone who read tom sawyer and was really excited about huckleberry finn coming out is an idiot. god, i loved the adventures of tom sawyer, but by your reasoning, i shouldn't even be allowed to be excited about anything mark twain came out with until it was already out and deemed both profitable and "artistic."
so...basically, this is a professional writer's way of saying..."fuck you"

2. You've obviously come on just to get reactions from people. So, let me be the first to blatantly say, "bring it on!"
I feel like wheelchair Joe in The Family Guy. What exactly do you think you can say that will beat me?
Nothing. Exactly.
Don't make a writer mad on something that is ultimately determined by how well you can express yourself with the written word. That's just friggin' stupid.
So, if you continue to come on here and be antagonistic, that, in turn, makes you friggin' stupid (yeah, I know, it's a stretch).
3. Umm, this better not be Nathan or Joss in troll form. Cuz, really, I'd do the same. I'd come on just to piss people off. I feel ya. I'd be doing the same thing.
4. Since you're not Nathan or Joss, I'd like to once again point out your deficiencies as a human being. You are weak. You have nothing better to do than go into a place that is a community of fans dedicated to one or more particular things, and then you go "wooohoo, i'll say something that sounds smart when i read it to myself, but really it makes no sense when you consider the history of art or film!"
5. you rock, you gave me something to write all about today

Errr... theSock that was me who said that, and I was implying that if ksnake was infact an intern at a movie studio trying to suck up to his boss, that if he didn't like Joss's style he should go back to the B****y c***p that movies studios are so good at producing.

you must be like the most feeble person in the world if all you have to do is come onto a site of something you dont have any intent on liking and acting like your some sort of suave girl with some keen intellect on why people are on this forum. And not everything is about money sorry to tell you... it does seem that way but sometimes people will do things because they have a little something called passion
ksnake
02-28-2007, 07:51 PM
No, not everything is about money. And in fact, Joss Whedon has more than enough money to bankroll his own movie--David Lynch did that recently, shooting Inland Empire with an off-the-shelf digital camera.
Joss Whedon can make any passion project he wants to. And if he's passionate about it, that's exactly what he should do. But see, his passion is dependent on some studio being dumb enough to give him tens of millions of dollars to make it--with absolutely no financial risk falling on his narrow shoulders.
And until that happens, he'll just write comic books.
Thanks for bumping my thread again.
