View Full Version : "Special Abilities"

As we know, many of Joss's girls (and no, I can't call them women  ) have been born with special physical or psychic "abilities" or had them thrust upon them for one reason or another. What about Mia?

To me, it sounds like she's not going to be the typical Buffy or River: born with an ability but either not aware of it or requiring an outside force to bring it out. I was thinking she'd be more of a Willow or Cordy: either someone who knowingly seeks to gain an ability or someone with no inherent ability who gets it "accidentally".

We've all posited a number of scenarios for Mia, not all of them including an ability for her, but considering Joss's body of work, I don't think it'd be out of the realm of possibilities. If she does have an ability, what kind do you think she'll have?

And while we're hashing that out, what about you? What kind of ability do you have? or would like to have? or would scare the frak out of you?

I don't think they (she) will be anything that folk don't have ordinarily, but that they hyper extention of current charistics.
More in the way like blind people (but not as extreame as daredare devil), and how folk in extreme situations develop an ablity to survive, like Mal, or Zoe, that guy that cut off his hand.
However knowing Joss's past history, I would not expect him to be able to resist, only the temptation of suprising his fans (by not) could possibly stay the wand of superpowers.

Sorry this is very coherent, too long of a day.

We all know what Joss likes to write when he has a female as a central character. It is his thing. But if he doesn't want to get in a rut, I think he will have changed this a little bit. To see an ordinary female stand up and become extraordinary - much as Mal does in Serenity - I can see that happening.

I think mia will have some sort of power.... she may not understand it or want it or even know she has it until weird and strange forces activate hjer powers or something like that....

I have to fight very hard not to make Goners my ideal movie in my head - so that in some strange and possibly pyschopathic way I end resenting the real movie (for being so much better than mine) when it sooner (sooner, please, sooner) or later comes along.

I'm fascinated by the idea of "slipping out" - of people being unaware you are there, or of you being aware of things other people cannot see. I would like Mia to be able to see a different sort of world to the one we see.

I saw a very good production of Goethe's Faust a while ago - towards the beginning Faust was in his study debating with himself if he should go over to the "dark side", bargin his soul and summon the devil - the thing was, there were all these devils in his room already, he couldn't see them but they were watching him intently, following the debate. At one point he wants to look something up and he is totally unaware that a devil hands him the book. I like that sort of thing.

Then there is the end to Tom Stoppard's Arcadia - two couples from two different times dancing in the same room. Neither couple seems to be aware of the other, yet we can see them both - they are from different eras but the same time; the time of the play we are are watching.....I know it's meant to be all very complicated and to do with quantum theory - still, it is a beautiful image - two couples waltzing, real and not real, knowing and not knowing what will come next - and not bumping into each other.

So, Mia; there and not there.

If I could have a special power, I'd like to be able to breathe underwater like a mermaid..er...man - MAN - like a merman.......

I hear you, Silvius. Some of the most amazing experiences I have ever had have come from scuba diving. I have to bring my air with me then but to see underwater, to be weightless if not mass-less, it's wonderful.
I'd add to the special power to be able to live underwater. Scuba masks are annoying, so it would be nice not to need them.

I voted she'd have something already too, and then the trauma of whatever it is that happens triggers it.

If I could have anything...

Well, in classic SF there are 2 forms of TK: the kind where you can only affect things that aren't part of you because you can't affect the mind that's doing the affecting, and the other kind that doesn't care about stuff like that.

I want the one where it doesn't care. I want to be able to lounge about 4 feet off the floor, watching Firefly, while my mind cleans the room and washes the dishes.

Iīm also voting for the she has a power thing, thinking something similar to Silvius` "slipping out" thing. I could imagine her being able to slip in a different world ( the world of death or the 4th dimension maybe? No idea what really....) Or she might just see people or things from them.

I hope Joss will give us some hints soon....

As for my dream power? Either telekinesis or beaming myself anywhere *triestothinkofanicebeacheveryhard*

Did it work, Kessie? Are you somewhere on the Dalmatian coast right now? Or did you go for heaven in Bora Bora? Enquiring minds want to know!!! ;)

I am not sure she will have inherent power. I am (and have been) thinking along the same lines as Silvius. And ordinary girl (damaged/) in extrordinary circumstances...alternate realities and universes.

I have been way to influenced by thinking of "The Maxx" in conjunction with Goners and Mia. I don't know why. An alternate dimension where damaged sould shift in and out of to protect themselves from some sort of life trauma. The realities run together increasingly as time passes...dark versions of each person surfacing, creatures crossing over. "There, not there."

I dunno. It will probably be so different..Joss usually never goes the way I expect him too. It will probably be visionary, intricate and beyond anything I could fathom.

Joss' girls seem to always have a destiny, and I don't expect that too change.

As far as I go...I think I am artistic, tho I feel more like Salieri then Mozart most of the time. The ability to recognize true genius but not able to replicate it in your own work..CLOSE but no cigar. I also am good at reading people. I tend to be pretty observant. The tone of voice, gesture, body language. People say alot more than words and usually it's different then what they are actually speaking. The online world is interesting as it removes a whole set of sensory guides on how to react to and evaluate people and their moods/intentions.

I would love to be able to fly.

Reading minds scares me...I just would not want to know what people really are thinking.

I think Mia will have some sort of power aswell, although i thought she might not be quite human either, (Only Joss Knows, i guess)

I think she would have some kind of power, but not be aware of it or want it. I don't think it's going to be a 'superpower' but something that's unconcious or that she's barely aware of and then realise it when things start happening. It would be nice to see someone not that powerful, but I would love to have something slightly off about her.

oh boy I haven't been here in a LONG while.
I have NO reason for thinking this but I don't think she'll have any power that any one of us women-folk aren't born with.

I'm thinking this may be Joss' "power that all women possess" movie.

Then again, I'm not Joss!

Wow. We're at exactly 2/3 for Special Powers and 1/3 for None. Hmm.

I betting she will have powers of some sort, even if that power is just to see things that other people can't, or something like that. I think (and this was said above too) that the only reason Joss would not give her powers would be specifically to break his previous molds.

Ah... nice to see older threads bumped up.

Can a person have a power if they don't know they have it? ;)

Its nice to be in a forum small enough that bumping is good!

And yeah, its possible for people to not know about their powers: that's often the premise of the story. The hero/heroine has to go on a journey of discovery, developing their newfound powers etc etc etc yadda yadda yadda. But that doesn't really seem to be Joss' style, so I don't know how its gonna be in Goners. Assuming she does have powers, that is.
